Rent a Mac
You can rent a Mac in two ways. One is a physical Mac delivered to you. The other is a remote Mac that you use over the internet. MacRun does the second one only. We rent a dedicated M6 Mac mini for $139 a month, and we do not ship hardware.
If you want a Mac on your desk
Many people who search for a Mac rental want a real computer for a few weeks. Think of a MacBook for a trip or an iMac for a temporary office. Or a few Macs for an event or a training course. We cannot help with that. Our Macs stay in our own private facility in New Jersey.
For a physical Mac, look for a computer rental company near you. Many cities have firms that rent laptops and desktops by the week or month. Event and audio visual rental companies often carry Macs too. Ask a few questions before you sign.
- Which model and year is it, and how much memory and storage?
- Is it wiped and set up fresh, and which macOS version runs on it?
- Who pays for damage, loss or a missing charger?
- Is delivery and pickup included, and what is the minimum term?
If you need the Mac for a year or more, leasing or financing may cost less than renting. Our page on leasing a Mac explains what Apple offers for that.
Rent a Mac in the cloud instead
A lot of people only need macOS, not the box itself. You might build an iPhone app from a Windows PC. You might need Xcode for a few months. Or you might want an AI coding agent on a Mac that never sleeps. For those jobs, a remote Mac works well.
You rent a whole Mac that sits in a rack. You reach it from your own computer with SSH and screen sharing. Nothing is shipped, so you can start the same day. Our page on what a cloud Mac is covers how that works in more detail.
What you get when you rent a Mac computer from MacRun
- A physical M6 Mac mini with 16 GB memory and a 256 GB SSD, for you alone.
- Administrator access, with sudo and Homebrew.
- macOS 27 and Xcode 26.6 installed, with the iOS 26.5 simulator ready.
- SSH and screen sharing over a private Tailscale network.
- Wired gigabit ethernet in our own private facility in New Jersey.
- It is ready 1 to 4 hours after you pay.
The first month is $69. The agent plan adds Claude Code, Codex and a desktop in your browser for $169 a month. You can cancel any month from the portal.
Can I rent an iMac?
Not from us. We rent Mac minis only. A remote Mac has no screen of its own anyway. You see its desktop on your own screen through screen sharing. So for software work, an iMac and a Mac mini feel the same from a distance.
If you need the iMac itself, for its display or for a desk, that is a job for a local rental company.
What a rented remote Mac can be used for
Apple's macOS license allows a Mac to be leased for developer services only. Its examples are building software, continuous integration and automated testing. Each lease must last at least 24 hours, and one customer must have the whole Mac. Our post on the license quotes the section in full.
So a remote Mac from us suits app builds, CI, testing and coding agents. It does not suit video editing for a client, a home media server, or office work on a borrowed desktop.
Who should not rent a Mac from us
- You need a Mac or MacBook in your hands. We do not ship hardware.
- You need a Mac for an hour or a day. We bill by the month.
- Your work is not software development, such as video or photo editing.
- You need an iMac, a Mac Studio, a Mac Pro or a GPU server.
- You want a free trial. We do not offer one.
If a remote Mac fits, read the guide to renting a Mac mini or go to the pricing page.
