Rent a Mac

What is a cloud Mac?

A cloud Mac is a real Apple computer in a provider's rack that you control over the internet. You see its desktop on your screen and type into its terminal. Yes, you can use one from Windows, Linux or a Chromebook. It suits builds, testing and AI agents best.

A Mac in the cloud is still a physical Mac

On Linux, a cloud is a big server split into many small virtual ones. macOS cannot work that way for long. Apple's macOS license lets it run only on Apple hardware. When a Mac is leased to someone, the license adds three rules.

  • The lease must last at least 24 consecutive hours.
  • One customer must have sole use of the whole Mac during the lease.
  • It may be used only for developer services, such as builds, CI and testing.

So every macOS cloud is a room full of Macs, usually Mac minis. There is no cloud MacBook either. Hosts use desktop Macs because they have no battery and no lid. Our post on the license quotes the rules word for word.

Three kinds of cloud hosted Mac

  • Shared. You get a user account on a Mac that other people also use. It is the cheapest kind. You usually get no admin rights.
  • Dedicated. You get the whole Mac for a month or more. You get admin rights and can install anything. MacRun works this way.
  • Hourly dedicated, like AWS EC2 Mac. You rent a whole Mac host by the hour, with a 24-hour minimum. AWS lists a mac2-m2 host at $0.878 an hour in US East. That is about $641 for a full month.

Hosted CI runners are a fourth kind. They give you a fresh virtual Mac for each job and bill per minute. You do not log in to them. Our page on Mac cloud hosting compares these models in depth.

How you connect to a macOS cloud machine

  • SSH gives you a terminal. It is all you need for builds, scripts and command line agents.
  • Screen sharing shows the full desktop. macOS has a VNC server built in, and any VNC client can reach it. On a Mac, the Screen Sharing app does this.
  • A browser tab. Some hosts show the desktop in a web page, so you install nothing. Our agent plan does this.

At MacRun, every Mac sits on a private Tailscale network. There is no public SSH port. You install Tailscale on your own computer and connect from there.

How latency feels

Every key press and mouse move goes to the Mac and back. Distance adds delay to each round trip. In a terminal you barely notice it. On the desktop, typing and scrolling feel a little behind when the Mac is far away.

For coding, builds and checking a simulator, it is fine. For video editing, music or games, it is not. Pick a host close to you if you plan to use the desktop a lot. Ours is in our own private facility in New Jersey, which suits the US East Coast best.

When a cloud Mac is enough, and when to own one

A cloud Mac is enough when these are true.

  • You need Xcode to build or sign an iPhone or Mac app.
  • You want CI builds on a Mac you control.
  • You want an AI coding agent on a Mac that never sleeps.
  • You need a Mac for months, not years.

Own a Mac instead when these are true.

  • You work on the Mac desktop all day and want it to feel instant.
  • You need it for years. A base M6 Mac mini lists at $899 on apple.com.
  • You need personal use, media or creative work, which a leased Mac does not allow.
  • You need a physical device, like a USB test rig or a real iPhone plugged in.

Where MacRun fits

MacRun rents a dedicated M6 Mac mini for $139 a month. The first month is $69. You get admin rights, macOS 27 and Xcode 26.6. It is ready 1 to 4 hours after you pay. The agent plan, at $169, adds Claude Code, Codex and the browser desktop.

Who should not use MacRun as a cloud Mac

  • You need a Mac for an hour or two. AWS bills by the hour after its 24-hour minimum.
  • You are far from the US East Coast and live in the desktop all day.
  • You need a static public IP, an SLA or a choice of regions.
  • Your work is not software development.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cloud Mac?

+

A cloud Mac is a real Apple computer in a provider's rack that you use over the internet. You connect with SSH, screen sharing, or a browser tab.

Can I use a Mac in the cloud from Windows?

+

Yes. You connect with an SSH client and a VNC or screen sharing client, or a browser on some hosts. Many Windows users rent one to build iPhone apps with Xcode.

Is there a cloud MacBook?

+

No. Cloud hosts use desktop Macs, usually Mac minis, because they have no battery or lid. You get the same macOS as on a MacBook.

Why can't I rent a macOS cloud machine by the minute?

+

Apple's macOS license requires each lease of a Mac to last at least 24 hours, for one customer. Per minute billing exists only for hosted CI jobs that you do not log in to.

Is a cloud Mac fast enough to use the desktop?

+

For coding and testing, yes. Distance adds a small delay to each key press and mouse move. For video, music or games, a Mac on your desk is better.
